The prosperous ancient city of Ephesus adopted the bee as the design for this enigmatic coin, home to the temple of Artemis, the Greek goddess of wilderness, wild animals and the moon, where the priestesses were known as 'melissae' (honey bees).

The obverse (front) inscription ΕΦ[ΕΣΙΩΝ] translates to 'coin of the Ephesians' (either side of the Bee). The reverse of the coin depicts a leaping stag in motion.
